did u use iron on paper? how did u make this??
ReplyDeleteIt depends of the page you're curious about. For the pages themselves, I used a high quality muslin backed with interfacing. Each page was kind of its own creation. I'd be happy to answer your questions.
ReplyDeleteI would love to make a quiet book similar to yours. Where did you get your pictures, and how did you get them on felt/fabric? Do you have templates? I can not draw or color very well. Thank you for your help and time.
ReplyDeleteHi Norma! I wish I had templates because that would have saved a LOT of time. Most of the pictures I designed based off of church paintings, Friend coloring pages, and clip art I found on the internet.
DeleteFor a lot of the colored pieces, I traced a picture onto interfacing (it is transparent enough to see through), drew over those lines with permanent marker, then colored them with Crayola twistables colored pencils.
After that step was done, I ironed them onto heavy duty pellon and stitched around the edges. Then the next step was crucial to keeping the color from rubbing off:
I painted the pieces with fabric medium (it is intended for mixing with acrylic paint to allow you to paint on fabric and be able to wash it without it coming off). I used it on any page or piece which I colored. I had been worried that the color would smear or rub off, but the fabric medium has solved that problem completely. Our little boy even chews on some of the pieces and they still look great.
If you are interested, I could scan a copy of each page and email it to you to kind of use as a template. I also have some of the images I traced (such as the food items) that I can send to you. Let me know if you're interested. Thanks for your good question!
As a follow-up, I did find a couple of pages online (the armor of god page and Noah's ark) and they had some templates. I will look up the links and add them.

ReplyDeleteThanks for your interest! Honestly, the whole book was kind of a do-it-as-I-go. All the pages are muslin backed with curtain stablilizer (I used spray-on adhesive to stick them together until I could surge them). A lot of the pictures are hand drawn and colored with colored pencils. After coloring, I painted over them with fabric medium to keep them from smudging. They past the baby chew test, so we're good.
ReplyDeleteI had a few templates for the shapes Plan for Me page and the finger puppets for Jesus Said Love Everyone. Let me See what I can dig out. Some of them came from a really old book I borrowed. Stay posted and I'll figure out how to post them. It will make life a lot easier!
For the plan of happiness pictures, I loved them so much I wanted to use the printed pictures. I went through a LOT of trial and error. The only thing I could come up with was complicated, but they have held up well:
1. Print the pictures, on cardstock, to a quality you are satisfied with.
2. Cut a piece of matching stabilizer fabric. Sew on velcro ONLY to the stabilizer.
3. Adhere stabilizer to printed cardstock (adhesive spray/etc)
4. Add a layer of clear vinyl over the picture.
5. Stich layers together, following right along edge of cardstock.
6. Cut down to small margin (1/4" or so).
7. Finish the edges with serger or zig zag stitch.
I'm going to go look for that book......
What was the year of the church magazine you found for "The Plan of Happiness" I love that for a quiet book! You are inspired! Or did you just google search?

Thank you so much for sharing your research and completed project! I am working on a new book for my toddler and am going to borrow some of your inspiration and ideas. It is always inspiring to me when someone is willing to share what they have done (or know) in order to help build others up and bring them to Christ without any intention of gain (other than blessings of course!).
